Efficient Numerical Simulation of Nonequilibrium Mass and Heat Transfer in Fractured Geothermal Reservoirs

چکیده

Transient heat andor fluid mass exchange between the permeable fracture system and the surrounding relatively impermeable country rock can be treated in geothermal reservoir simulators using the “MINC” technique. This approach typically requires about an order of magnitude more computer time than the analogous “porous medium” problem. Under practical conditions, the problem can often be linearized. This paper presents some results using this “linearized MINC” approach. Two situations may be treated-isothermal transient mass transfer between fractures and country rock, and nonequilibrium conductive heat transfer from the country rock to and from the fractures. No assumptions concerning the character of the time-history of fracture pressure or temperature (such as monotonicity, for example) are required. Numerical reservoir simulations using the technique require little more computer time than the analogous porous medium problem.

Heterogeneity Preserving Upscaling for Heat Transport in Fractured Geothermal Reservoirs

In simulation of fluid injection in fractured geothermal reservoirs, the characteristics of the physical processes are severely affected by the local occurence of connected fractures. To resolve these structurally dominated processes, there is a need to develop discretization strategies that also limit computational effort. In this paper we present an upscaling methodology for geothermal heat t...

Coupled Geomechanical and Reactive Geochemical Simulations for Fluid and Heat Flow in Enhanced Geothermal Reservoirs

A major concern in development of fractured reservoirs in Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) is to achieve and maintain adequate injectivity, while avoiding short-circuiting flow paths. The injection performance and flow paths are dominated by fracture rock permeability. The evolution of fracture permeability can be made by change in temperature or pressure induced rock deformation and geochemic...

Coupling Geomechanics and Transport in Naturally Fractured Reservoirs

Large amounts of hydrocarbon reserves are trapped in naturally fractured reservoirs which arechallenging in terms of accurate recovery prediction because of their joint fabric complexity andlithological heterogeneity. Canada, for example, has over 400 billion barrels of crude oil in fracturedcarbonates in Alberta, most of this being bitumen of viscosity greater than 106 cP in the GrosmontFormat...

Numerical Simulation of the Freezing Process in Geothermal Boreholes Using Solar Heat Injection

Ground thermal energy as a clean and sustainable energy source has received significant attention lately. Several strategies and hybrid configurations have been proposed to harvest geothermal energy for air conditioning and industrial purposes. The possibility of moist soil freezing in the vicinity of borehole tubes is known to be the source of several benefits and difficulties. The high storag...

Simulation and Assessment of Surfactant Injection in Fractured Reservoirs: A Sensitivity Analysis of some Uncertain Parameters

Fracture reservoirs contain most of the oil reserves of the Middle East. Such reservoirs are poorly understood and recovery from fractured reservoirs is typically lower than those from conventional reservoirs. Many efforts have been made to enhance the recovery and production potential of these reservoirs. Fractured reservoirs with high matrix porosity and low matrix permeability need a seconda...
